See our insights (based on our own experience after purchasing and using the product, or based on some research work) on Crane Drop Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier – Filter Free, these might be useful for better understanding.
Ok, take it from me, we know all the qualms of this humidifier. We have owned 6 of these things. Currently, we posses 3, but previously had an additional 3 go bad in the past (1 was still under warranty and was replaced for free). First off, check the white tag near the plug there will be a date code. That is the month and year that your unit was produced. This is important because crane has yet to nail down the perfect design of this thing, and no two of our six units were the exact same. (we think they know this too, because their customer service is awesome if you experience issues within a year from purchase). Best tip: only use distilled water. Follow the instruction manual’s tips for sanitizing with vinegar too. The good:- excellent customer service from crane- having owned other brand humidifiers that cost about the same, the build quality is very sleek and polished. This unit can function as practical decor. – good output and quiet [when all the components aren’t about to burn out. See below]. We always keep one next to the bed and one that floats between our desk and the living room. We have never had a puddle or dripping problem. What to watch out for:- this unit is susceptible to unbalanced fans that eventually wear out, and nebulizers that just stop working. – sometimes the top cone cap leaks mist down the sides. This is where the puddle problem can happen. Watch for this. Only one of mine came with a poor fitting cone. But we always save parts from our old broken units and had a spare to swap in. Otherwise, we would suggest smearing some silicone around the base of the cone. – try not to let the auto off happen. It’s controlled by a float switch in the water basin, and we find our humidifier sounding like a car that’s about to stall out because the float switch is turning the unit on and off rapidly as the water level is in that in-between zone and not low enough to truly shut it off for good. Imho this needs to be addressed by crane, because it wears the aforementioned parts and causes failure. This wear is usually what makes other reviewers complain of loud fan motor noise. It’s the sound of death closing in for the unit. Random observations:- the white one with the blue tank is always a little different from the other color schemes (different knobs, higher overall output). Honestly, we think this one is the most durable our longest lasting one is this one. Don’t ask us why. – average lifespan is 2 winter seasons (except our white and blue one. It’s on it’s 3rd. )all in all, yes, we recommend this humidifier. For the price, if it lasts us 2-3 winters of constant running then we say it’s a good product. If you absolutely don’t care about looks and don’t mind loud bubbly aquarium noise then go with the safety first brand humidifier for almost half the price, although we can’t say it has any more longevity than the crane drop shaped one.
We purchased the cane drop shape utlrasonic cool mist humidifier almost 5 years ago. We are happy to report he s had a work out and is still going. We would highly recommend it for many reasons. Our husband and we suffer from sinus issues and the dry air is painful for us so this mister is on most of the day and night. We wouldn t say it s been continuously running for 5 years, but pretty darn close. Enough to where it s been nicknamed mr. Mister . Glowing blue is soothing and the shape is modern. We don t mind having him hanging out with company because he s hip and cool. There is a light, but for us it s not that bright while for others it might be too bright. Just like the occasional burp of bubbles, it depends on the individual. The cane drop cool mist humidifier holds 1 gallon of water and the output of mist is easily adjustable. It is very quiet with the exception of the burble of bubbles that comes up occasionally. It s not loud enough to wake us and we are light sleeper. The nozzle on top is adjustable all around so you can easily point it in the direction you would like the mist aimed. This particular unit does not require a filter and we are pleasantly surprised at how clean it stays. We have the older model from 2010 and have used distilled water instead of tap (our tap water is hard). Vinegar to clean it, but we haven t had to do that but about once a month. See the video instructions on the crane site/profile for how to clean it, it s super easy. Other reviews indicated furniture damage which happened to be one of our concerns. We will say that if you put the mist on the lowest setting, the mist will fall rather than be pushed up and out. We would suggest if you are worried about that then monitor it before leaving it to ruin surfaces. We have not had this problem as we have got it sitting on the kitchen counter and when it is running in the bedroom, our nightstand has a glass top that we ve had custom fit so that the cats wouldn t jump up and scratch the nice furniture. The moisture output has been enough to help us both with our sinuses all year round, dry skin in the cooler months, and even soothe coughs when cold/flu season rears its ugly head. The largest room in our apartment has a 14 foot vaulted ceilings in addition to a large stairwell that is easily humidified with our mr. Mister. We have included a few photos so that you might see the output of mist as well as the brightness of the light in daytime. We would recommend this product and we will be purchasing another one as a gift for a relative. Giving this guy some tlc is the key to a long lasting relationship.
As a mom of toddler who always seems to catch a cold or have upper respiratory infections, we must say this humidifier has been a life saver. We ve had ours since she was 6 months old so it s been over 2 years and it s still working well. It is quiet, simple to use and effective which is what matters most. It immediately cools off the air and helps our daughter get the much needed rest she needs when she s sick. We also know how long it lasts with the amount of water placed in the tank. We don t have to worry about checking on it to see if it s empty in the middle of the night. We keep it close enough to a location where the mist can surround our daughter and we have no complaints because she sleeps well and even breathes well when in use.
We generally use this when someone is sick. It’s nice that the “spout” on top can turn a full 360 degrees – it can be sitting on the nightstand with the power led indicator facing away from you, but the mist can be directed towards you. One important thing to note when you use this – the mist it puts out is very wet. We have used other humidifiers that seem to get more of the moisture into the air instead of causing the moisture to sink to the ground where the mist falls – we left this on full blast one night aimed at the bed and we woke up in the middle of the night to a wet sheet/wall/carpet where the mist was falling (had to use a fan to dry it all out). One annoyance is that the cap on the underside of the tank that you turn on/off in order to fill the tank is right next to some rather sharp plastic pieces on the tank that stick out to support the tank structure. When you turn the cap to open it you have to use quite a bit of force (since it seals tightly) and if you’re not careful you’ll end up slicing your hand on the plastic sticking up from the tank (and are even more likely to get a painful cut if your hands are wet from handling the wet underside of the tank). Overall this is a nice humidifier, we just wish it would have been designed differently so that the tank could be opened without risking a cut/scrape.
If you need a humidifier, this is the one to get. They will run 24/7 and last 2 to 3 years, the first time we bought these, we ran them until the red light came on (showing you need to add water) they only lasted 1 year, the next year when we ordered this humidifier, we kept and eye on the water level and when it got down to the where the water would be below the see-through part, that is when we would shut it off, fill it up and than tun it back on, now we get a good 2 to 3 years of running them 24/7. Our home is 2400 sq feet, we have one running in the living room & one in the family room (other side of the house) it keeps our home at 45 to 47% humidity, at times it will run higher when the humidity is running high outside, than we just turn the dial down and run them 1/2 the speed. We only use distilled water in them, the 1st year we used the elephant, we went through 1 1/2 gallons a day, when we had to buy again, we tried the penguin, that uses the same 1 1/2 gallons a day, the tear drop uses a good 2 to 3 gallons a day. The crane humidifiers are the best humidifiers you will ever find.
It’s winter. And our place is really dry with electric heat. We also have a massive sound aversion. Even the noise of a ticking clock will irritate me. We have gone through 5 humidifiers in the last 2 years. This one is efficient and quiet. If you set the gauge to moderate, the tank will last a little over 1 day. The only negative is it is difficult to fill as it is not flat on the top as you fill from the bottom. Note: pink residue — if you see a pink residue developing, that is not a flaw with the unit. It is a bacteria in the air and as far as we know, there is no getting rid of it. To clean the residue do a good rinse with vinegar.
This is a great humidifier. It is easy to use and easy to clean. We bought it to use in our baby’s room and have been using it nightly since it arrived a few weeks ago. Prior to this, we had a humidifier with a filter that molded rather quickly. We were drawn to this humidifier because there is no filter and the reviews were good. We have not had the issue before so it may have been a user mistake, but we did notice there was water around the humidifier this morning like it had leaked a little. We plan to monitor this, but so far this is the only issue we have experienced.
We were surprised by the size of this humidifier for the price, it’s really big. The tank can hold a gallon of water which the box claims will let it run for 24 hours. Setup is super easy, you just remove it from the box, fill with water, and turn it on. There’s no complicated parts to screw in to place like other ones we have tried. One thing that we noticed is that when you first use it, there’s a odd plastic smell in the mist. This eventually goes away, but you might want to wash the tank before using it for the first time if you are planning on putting this in your bedroom. The dial is a bit confusing though, and it’s often hard to find the right mist setting. There’s a dot on the dial to show that the humidifier is off, but when you turn the dial on there’s a series of increasingly smaller dots to show the mist level. That means you get more mist the smaller the dots get. Seems a little backwards. Otherwise the humidifier has been great. The tank is quiet and you won’t hear a dripping sound all night. When the tank runs out of water there is an auto-shutoff for the machine.
We bought a unit like this from a store before the coronavirus pandemic. It worked well, so we bought an identical unit from since stores were closed. It took over a month for to ship it. The box arrived wet, damaged and re-taped, like it was a returned unit (see pictures). We tried to return it when we saw the box’s condition, but ‘s website said the return period expired ( penalizes you even if it’s their fault for taking so long to ship it). We had no choice but to keep it. Fortunately, the unit itself was undamaged since it was encased in a protective cardboard shell. Things we like about it – not too expensive;. Aesthetically pleasing; quiet; can be used for three nights before refilling; portable and light; mist volume is adjustable; filter cartridge isn’t expensive/is readily available/lasts for 40 days; easy weekly maintenance (put 1 tablespoon of vinegar with water in base and 2 tablespoons of vinegar with water in canister); reliable. Things we don’t like about it – a white film appears on furniture, glass, plastic, glasses, tv, etc. ; refilling requires you to take entire unit to the sink so you don’t make a mess (when you separate the canister from the base, water will drip from the canister’s base); the canister’s teardrop shape requires you to position it carefully in the sink while refilling; every three months or so, a film of residue forms inside the canister and it’s difficult to clean it (need to use a flexible brush that fits in the canister opening to scrub off film. Overall, we like the unit and would buy again. We would buy it from a store though (once they open again), since it’s the same price and ‘s delivery/customer service is going downhill.
Don’t allow the auto-off to happen. Turn it off and refill the container before it empties to avoid it whenever possible. Otherwise, it will on/off/on/off several times and it burns out the motor faster. Otherwise, we clean it with vinegar and citric acid because we use tap water and get crusty buildup. We have an oxo cleaning brush but sometimes we use a butter knife to remove buildup. We empty weekly and fully clean every 2-3 weeks but we use them at maximum all day because winter here is so dry. One will cover our living room, dining room, and kitchen. The other we have for bedroom/bathroom. They are quiet and we have definitely sleep with one running, but we also have a white noise fan next to it.
We bought this when our daughter was born and it has proven very useful over the past four years. We use it any time she has a cold or a stuffy nose at night and it really helps. One drawback is that it is a little loud as the water is circulated, so that every 15 minutes or so there is a bubbly noise which wakes her up. (we’ve used this in our room and it wakes us up, too. ) we keep it as far as we can away from her, and usually use white noise with it, and it’s generally ok. We are not sure if there is a truly silent one out there, but if your child is a light sleeper or wakes easily, this might not be the best choice.
We are bona fide family of crane drop cool mist humidifier owners. We grew up with the warm mist humidifiers and read about cool mist just in the past few years. The benefits of cool mist outweigh warm air humidifiers. Less bacteria growth both inside the machine and inside your home. Cool mist humidity is less damaging to furniture. Cool mist has been tested around those with chronic breathing problems and has been deemed safer for their use. After reading tons of cool mist reviews, we purchased this one and fell in love. This machine is quiet, easy to use (stupid easy to use) and adjustable. We can run the machine on low overnight and still wake up to cool, refreshing mist. We ended up buying 2 more for us, one for our new baby nephew and one for mom and dad. Dad has chronic lung disease and while he was unable to use a warm air humidifier without trouble breathing, he finds relief from dry cough, using this humidifier. We have found it works best in spaces less than 400 sq feet.
We liked the cute shape. It has multiple settings, also good. The filling process not as easy. You have to hold it upside down in the sink to fill, screw the cap on, then put the base on upside down and then flip it over right side up. You can’t just fill the water as is (we keep in the bedroom) because the bit of water in the shoot will spill everywhere. (we read all the directions before filling so we knew to not make this mistake. ) there is no ‘filling line’ so upside down you have the just guess what ¾ full is. But once you flip over it’s even less. Frustrating design, could have just put some level lines on there, no reason not to. That’s why it’s 4 stars and not 5. Has a little green on/night lite. We also purchased the little fish water purifier to float in it because we have high calcium water.
We purchased this humidifier when our son was born. After three months we still use it every day. This humidifier is particularly great in the winter when the heat dries our house out more than usual. We definitely notice a difference when we don t run it for a day or so because our son gets all stuffed up. One of our favorite features of this humidifier is that it automatically shuts off when it runs out of water and the light at the bottom turns red to catch your attention. Our other humidifier didn’t do this, it would remain on which scared us since we leave it on during the day. We weren t sure what that would do. So this one gives us peace of mind but it also is a great product. Oh, and we love how it looks.
We were looking for a humidifier with a clear tank and a clean design and we found it. We are able to keep it out for our tropical plants all the time without having the ugly blue tank like most other humidifiers on the market. It’s nice it holds a gallon of water (distilled water) so we don’t need to refill it every day, depending on how high we have it on. It’s also very easy to refill. Just be sure when refilling it to empty the remaining water that sits in the base or it could over flow. We take a bowl and place it on the floor next to it and empty the remaining water into a bowl so we don’t need to unplug it. We have this in our living room and when we go from there to our bedroom we notice our nose gets dry and stuffy so now we will be purchasing another one for our bedroom.
Great product for the money. Low price but definitely not made cheap. Helps with nasal congestion and the motor is very quiet. The only annoying thing is the light inside that produces a green glow when on. If you like a dark room at night then the light might be a pain. We just used a piece of black electrical tape to cover it. Otherwise a great product.
This is our second crane humidifier. We previously had the same model for about 2 years that we loved, but we dropped the water tank while we were filling it and it broke. (a good reason to hold it with 2 hands while filling it). It really adds moisture to the air (have a gas furnace and the air gets very dry). For that reason, we are usually filling the tank once a day. We don t clean it every time we fill it, just dump the old water in the base and rinse it, and fill the top part. We clean the base and the top once a week with white vinegar. We have had this new one for almost a week now, and it works just as well as our first one. We have it set up on a bookcase, and point the spout away from the wall, because it really puts out a lot of moisture (it can be adjusted).
We have only had it about 24 hours but so far we really like it and have already ordered a second one for another room. We will admit that it is likely going to be a pain in the butt to clean, but we are hoping that if we keep up with a weekly vinegar rinse as instructed that we won’t see any mildew buildup in the tank as others have mentioned having. It puts out a nice amount of vapor and has done a good job humidifying our dry bedroom even with the air conditioner on full blast. Personally we don’t find the light to be too bright that it affects our sleep, and we also feel the unit is almost silent, as we could only hear it when we put our ear close deliberately to listen. **update***nearly two weeks since we purchased this. We have used it every day and night, 24/7. We cleaned it with vinegar on the 7 day mark. The base is easy enough to clean but like others have mentioned it’s impossible to clean the tank. We have been using distilled water bought from the store and even using that the bottom of our tank has a residue that only comes off when we wipe it with our finger, and with the design of the opening and the container it’s impossible to wipe all of it off. There’s a very visible difference between where we have wiped it off and where there is still residue. It’s like those commercials for a sponge mop where they wipe a clean white spot in the middle of a bunch of black dirt. ***update #2***our elderly father dropped the tank in the sink while filling it up and it cracked and is no longer usable. We contacted customer service and they will not exchange it and we have to pay $25 for a new tank. Very disappointed with the customer service. Anyway, this accident has us re-evaluating the design of the product. The tank has a “handle” on the top that the directions warn against using when there is water in the tank, which makes it a handle in name only as functionally it’s useless. That said, the lack of handles or flat sides to lay the tank down on makes emptying and refilling a three hand job if you want to do it 100% safely and accident-proof. So all in all you’re sacrificing functionality in terms of cleanliness and ease of use for a cute design.
Thanks to all those who have reviewed this product. Most everyone helpfully added to the discussion, and it certainly helped us make an intelligent purchasing decision. A common thread with the negative reviews seemed to be lack of understanding about how to use it. Some reported that it left white residue on nearby objects. Some said it made the floor or furniture damp. Some complained about the wimpy “handle”. Read the instructions. Setting the unit on a mid-range setting using low-mineral content water is the key. We have naturally very soft tap water (tds 30ppm) so we just use tap water. After a couple of weeks of constant use, there are no mineral deposits to clean and the very fine mist that the unit produces does not make anything in the vicinity wet. Be sure you perform the simple and easy maintenance as explained in the instructions. The stated output is 2. 3 gallons per day. We are thinking that this must be with the unit cranked all the way up, which very few people will be able to do successfully. Perhaps if the ambient humidity is extremely low, it might work, but for most people the output will be significantly lower. We were worried that, with the 1 gallon capacity tank, we would have to refill a couple of times per day. For us, the output is about one gallon per day and it keeps the humidity between 32 and 36 percent. Stated room size is up to 250 square feet. We use it in our bedroom which is approximately 340 square feet and has 14 foot ceilings and we normally keep the 3 doors open. It is definitely undersized for our situation, but it is still helpful. It improves the comfort level for sleeping. Our relative says that we snore less and that her sinuses are much more comfortable. Currently, the rest of the house has normal humidity in the 25 percent range. One thing that seems to be ignored in most of the descriptions of humidifiers on is the power consumption. Ultrasonic humidifiers tend to be energy efficient, while warm mist humidifiers tend to draw a lot of power. We measured the power consumption on this unit and it runs between 8 and 28 watts depending on where you set the dial. The 8 watt setting has almost no output and the 28 watt setting belches out water like crazy. At the min-range setting we use, the power draw is 24 watts, very acceptable for long-term use. For comparison, the very small vicks warm mist humidifier with auto shut-off draws 260 watts. Since we use it in the bedroom, we were worried about the noise the unit might make. We live in a rural area and it is usually dead quiet most of the time. Any tiny sound seems like a roar. We set the unit on a mouse pad to protect the furniture and dampen any vibration sound. On our medium setting, when standing right next to the unit, you can hear a slight whisper. From 20′ feet away, where our pillows are, it is essentially totally quiet. We would buy it again and we can recommend it for our friends.
We have had real annoyances with humidifiers in the past: bulky, white powder, damp furniture, and almost always a pita to clean. This one works beautifully. We use filtered tap water, and the only “white powder” issue we have had is when we had it cranked up too high overnight (and even then it was a simple dust job and it was gone, no problem). We like the control: learn to mind how high you have it turned up, depending on how dry the air is that day. Even cranked up, we have had no problems with condensation getting anything damp. It shuts off when it runs out of water (great for peace of mind. ), but leaves a red light on so that you notice the problem. It’s surprisingly easy to fill from the (filtered) tap, and cleans quickly and easily. We have been using it non-stop for a month now and it’s still going strong. We are back to get another one for the bedroom, since our apartment is a bit too large for a single one to cover properly. Overall, we agree with the reviewers who point out that a lot of the 1- and 2-star complaints are easily solved by following the basic directions. Read the (short) manual and you’ll be very pleased with this one. =========update (2/8/13)a warning/tip for those who have one or are thinking of buying (from someone who now has three of them):it’s tempting to try to overfill it. You fill up the tank, turn it over, and between the air pocket and the immediate drain into the basin, the tank’s suddenly half empty. By the time we set up our third one, we felt like a pro, so we tipped the tank so it was almost completely full from the tap, then “pre-loaded” the basin itself with water before joining them. We thought that we would ended up with a dud machine because when we turned it on the mist was mostly large droplets, and they only reached to the halfway point of the inside tube (i. E. , nothing came out). After remembering a note somewhere warning not to overfill it (yeah, whatever, right?), we tried leaving it out empty overnight to dry out. Then we filled up the tank reasonably full and put it on the empty base. The tank level immediately dropped to it’s half-level. But the machine worked fine. So they’re serious about not overfilling it, and if you have the problem we described, it may just mean that you somehow waterlogged it. Try letting it dry out empty overnight and then filling it modestly. You may find it’s not broken after all. :).
