See our insights (based on our own experience after purchasing and using the product, or based on some research work) on Varomorus Propane Insect Fogger for Fast and Effective Varroa Mites Control, these might be useful for better understanding.
We have been keeping bees for 21 years. We have been slow to use oxalic acid to treat our bees, but this year was our year to jump in. In january we researched all the vaporizers options and found at the low end, a unit costs around $50, but the units used by commercial beekeepers cost $500+. We had read stories of how hot the low end units can get at the tip and even saw stories of people burning down their hives and burning their bees. Many commercial beekeepers use a high-cost electronic vaporizer which needs power for operation (a problem unless you have a truck battery or portable generator). While these units are precise in their delivery of oa vapors, the cost is high and the time to treat each hive was lengthy, due to the way the unit slowly heats up the crystals to vaporize. Then we found the varomorus unit. We liked that it was portable (using a small propane tank for power) and faster in treating hives (using fog bursts instead of a vapor) so much faster than the more expensive electronic unit. So we bought mine here online @ amz early this year to treat our new spring packages. The fogging was perfect. (3-4 puffs of fog in each package hive), fast (we treated our 7 package hives in minutes) and very effective. We checked for mites after our treating and found them dead on the bottom sticky board). We cleaned the unit according to the instructions and put it away to use in the fall, (for a third treatment for mites)—one other type in aug. When we fired up the unit a month ago, it was clogged and not functioning as before. Fortunately, we received excellent support from eugene at the manufacturer in florida. We had clogged the small internal filter with oa crystals. Once that issue was fixed it worked like a charm, as before. Fast and effective. Here is what we learned about how to use this device without problems:1. Use 100ml of alcohol as outlined in the instruction; mix in 15g of oa crystals . 2. The crystals are stubborn to fully dissolve to get to a fully clear liquid, unless you mix the solution over a warm water bath. 3. We then strain the clear solution into the holding tank of the unit. (this step will catch any small undissolved crystals that can clog the small internal filter). 4. Use only a minimal turn of the gas release thumb wheel on the top of the unit then spark the gas, using the right side handle spark trigger–if you turn on too much propane the trigger won’t engage for safety reasons. You don’t need much heat to make the fogger operate properly5. Wait a few minutes for the chamber to warm and you will begin to see fog streams emerge from the tip end of the wand. Now you are ready to treat your hives. 6. If you see fog coming from the wand where it connects to the fogger (not the tip) you should tighten the fitting with the wrench provided, if a fog stream is not releasing from the tip- end of the wand that opening can be adjusted too with the same wrench. 7. Fog each hive inside the bottom entrance or bottom back (we drilled holes in the back-bottom of the bottom brood box for treatment and plugged it with a golf tee. )8. Insert the wand into the hive and release 3-4 streams of fog. By pulling and releasing the lever on the left side of the fogger. Fogging takes only seconds for each hive. We hold the propane tank in our right hand when we an pulling the fog release lever on the left; and have had no issues where we felt we needed some additional handle. (see instructions on how many treatments times are suggested per hive to complete a full treatment. Depending whether brood is present or not)9. After fogging. We run a small amount of distilled water into the holding tank and through the fogger to clean the internal filter, fog chambler, and wand. 10. Then, we let the unit cool down, remove the white holding tank, rinse it and set it aside. We add a small amount of mineral oil to the tank fitting in the fogger chamber and release the fogger lever to disperse the mineral oil through the chamber and out the wand tip. The mineral oil will keep the unit from rusting or gumming up while stored. Done. . We then store the unit for our next use. 10a. When we are ready to use the unit again we first flush/fog distilled water through the unit to flush out all the mineral oil. Recently, we learned that we can also use this unit to fog a thymol crystals solution, (15b tc to 100ml alcohol) which we intend to use next year for our august mite treatment application. This device is a must have tool imo for beekeepers who want to save their bees and not buy packages every year. Many of the other reviewers may have had issues, but these are likely not the fault of the unit, which has been in use for years in europe, before being available in the usa. And if there are problems the support is really helpful..
This is the european version that has been fitted with the usa propane tank adaptor, which is good news-the usa propane tanks fit. Be aware, as we did shop around there are other sellers that sell only the european version which is not compatible with usa propane tanks. As a new beekeeper who originally bought one of the popular youtube video propane insect foggers to treat our hive with oxalic acid. We are sure you have seen the videos if you are beekeeper. Wasn t happy with the youtube version cheaply made and impossible to deliver a consistent dosage of chemical. The varomorus is a much higher quality product vs. The mostly plastic youtube version. The varomorus has a gravity fed tank that is attached to an adjustable injection pump. Meaning you can much more precisely deliver the treatment dosage to your hive(s). Also comes with mixing instructions for several different treatment techniques- extremely helpful. After unpacking we did notice a couple things. #1 some slight paint imperfections at several locations on the fogger #2 a slight solvent smell. We contacted the seller and they quickly explained that a small amount of lubricant is left in the pump after assembly and the imperfections are caused by post assembly testing. The sellers response put our concerns at ease-wasn t a concern going forward. Before we used the fogger, we flushed the system with 91% isopropyl alcohol which effectively removed any lingering lubricant from the pump. Overall impression: this is a tool that requires practice to use properly (practice with distilled water to adjust the injection pump & to adjust the propane heat source-heat source can really pump out the btu s), fogger requires some assembly (seller provides a small wrench), fogger will require proper cleanup after each use to ensure proper pump functioning (91% isopropyl alcohol works well-flush system after cooldown), lastly don t over tighten the components as you assemble the fogger. If you are beekeeper who cares for your bees and you are willing to practice with this fogger then we think you will be a happy customer like me.
We are new to fog treatment of mites but decided to try using mineral oil and wintergreen. The device worked extremely well. Created a dense and notably cool fog. (we were concerned about the comments regarding hot oil but tested the temperature and found no heat in the discharge). Initially, we had some questions about it s operation but these were quickly answered by the seller. We have used this a few times this year and have not seen issues with it only working once or twice. After use, we are running distilled water through it which seems to work fine. We think it is important to experiment with this before using it on your hives the first time, so you re comfortable with it s operation. Regarding comments about clogging, prior to using the fogger, we contacted the seller to ask about the small screen filter included with the device since we weren t sure what the screen s purpose was. Apparently this needs to be installed if using oa. We don t know if this is the reason others have experienced difficulties. We have not had an issue with getting burned, but you need to be careful. Parts do get hot, but that should be a given. We would recommend this to others looking to treat by fogging.
This is one of the only foggers purpose built for fogging beehives for varroa mites. It is much safer than other insect foggers because of the longer nozzle keeping the hot coils away from the hive and vapors. Don’t expect dense fog when using oxalic acid in this fogger or any fogger. The alcohol and oxalic acid are vaporized when they hit the hot coils so “fogging” is not an accurate description. If you want dense fog use food grade mineral oil. Read the directions. This fogger is also calibrated to deliver 1 milliliter of solution per pump so you can do the math and figure exactly how many pumps to deliver to your hive. It is very well built and has a unique but accurate pumping system. Don’t grab onto the hot parts.
Really nicly made not cheap materials ,self lighter is really handy . Used it this weekend high qualiitywill use more as is easy to to prep and quick to do hives of bees.
Truly is an amazing fogger, we have 14 hives and we fogged all 14 within a very short period of time.
So far so good. We like it better than insect fogger, because it is gravity fed and we think we have better control over the amount of product that we use in the fog. You can adjust the pen to fog a metered amount. We just ajusted mine to fog two milliliters per pull of the spray trigger. If you use mineral oil as a fog, you may have problems? the mineral oil does not want to feed right? we think the problem is the thickness of the oil getting into the pan before it can be injected into the tube? (not 100% sure on this)???the shipping was the worse we have ever experienced. It s arrival date changed 3 times ( was even told at one point it may have been lost. And when it arrived the box was tore. Part of the metal hose was sticking through the box and was bent. We were able to slowly bend it back into place without crimping it. If not for the problem with the mineral oil and shipping. We would have given this 5 stars.
Like most products today, the directions for use are challenging at best. There is a detailed photo in the directions that enumerates the components. However, the words in the directions are different than those shown on the picture. Also, there is a small piece that for some reason the manufacturer wants the consumer to install and those directions are on the back page, after the directions on set up and clean up. That should be the 1st instruction, not an afterthought on the back page. What we like about it is that once we got it working, it put out great fog. We also like using a small propane tank to power it instead of dragging around a heavy battery. We are small woman. We can’t lift a heavy deep hive box without removing at least half the frames. With the fogger, we can just stick the nozzle in and be done with our varroa treatment in a few seconds without even opening the hive. Overall, we are glad we bought it. One just needs to be patient with it initially.
Started with a burgess fogger which for several reasons, did not like. This fogger is great, does a great job, plenty of vapor, easy to use, really like the long discharge probe. Why a four, well we picked it up while hot from the middle, just in front of propane tank and got burned. So be careful when you pick it up. Also don’t open gas valve wide open, just crack it open. All in all, it cost three times the burgess but worth the money.
Great product to control the mites. Easy to use and the fastest method we know.
Once you get used to it, it’s fairly simple to use. We had a question and support was very responsive. Time will tell if it is as effective as other means but it is well made and simple to use. Hopefully it will prove to be an effective solution to varoa for our bees.
This fogger is a very effective way to treat multiple hives quickly and efficiently. We are very impressed. Once we mixed the alcohol with the oxalic acid it took about 20 minutes to treat 15 hives. No battery or electricity to set up and carry around. This runs off of propane and is much better than the wand oxalic treatment.
Received the varomorus fogger for varroa mites the next day. Worked with setting it up and it worked great. We are impressed with the quality and function. Ready to do our alcohol wash and see what the mite count is. Ready to help support the workers. Thanks, and we would recommend this product.
It is awkward for being left handed and we are used to one arm tool using, but with a bit of getting used to it will be a great tool.
Fogger works very well, really like the long tube for delivering the fog deep into the back of the hive. Definitely killing varroa mites.
The fogger works great. It makes doing a oxalic acid treatment very easy, just seconds per hive. So much better than having to lug around a battery.
Mineral oil treatment of honey bees. Performs well. One has to watch flame size to be sure it stays in center of heat exchanger. (serpentine tube coil) a low flame is best.
Used for mite control , in honey bees hives.
Finally a product that works without such a high price. We run around 150 to 200 hives and it has saved us hours of time.
We use our varomorus fogger to kill varroa mites. We find it important to clean the fogger out after every use. We use isopropyl alcohol 91%. If not the oxalic acid will clog the system. Letting the alcohol sit in the holding tank over night will clear everything.
